Chikombedzi is the main town of the southern sub district of Chiredzi district in the arid lowveld of Zimbabwe. Large rivers cross the region but water does flow only during few months of the year. Droughts and floods are frequent hazards in that region. Shangan people as a minority group in Zimbabwe are the main inhabitants of Chikombedzi region. The Shangans have been semi-nomads , today they are settled in “Kraals”, where families live together in few houses. During independency war Chikombedzi and the local mission hospital of Free Methodist Church (USA) had to suffer badly. After the liberation war Free Methodist Church of Zimbabwe became an independent church and the owner of the hospital.
Chikombedzi hospital is the only bigger health institution of the area and was designated by the ministry of health as sub district-hospital, subsidised financially by the district concerning drugs, salaries and running costs. Main medical problems are HIV and tuberculosis, the hospital got the status of a tuberculosis treatment centre of the district.
worked under the German NGO “Internationaler Hilfsfonds e.V.” in Chikombedzi at the hospital and in the agricultural projects Malikango-Muraba.
